Bernd G. Janzen advises U.S. and foreign clients on antidumping and countervailing duty proceedings before the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. International Trade Commission, as well as in appeals of agency determinations to the U.S. Court of International Trade. Mr. Janzen also advises government and private clients on dispute settlement proceedings under the NAFTA and the WTO. Mr. Janzen advises U.S. importers on product classification, valuation and other trade matters before U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Mr. Janzen advises clients on U.S. trade preference proceedings under the Generalized System of Preferences,and on a range of international trade policy matters before the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and federal government agencies. Mr. Janzen works with clients in the softwood lumber, paper, steel, metallurgical products, seafood, electronics, uranium and other industries.

Before joining Akin Gump, Mr. Janzen was an attorney in the Office of the Chief Counsel for Import Administration in the U.S. Department of Commerce. While there, he advised Import Administration on its responsibilities under the U.S. antidumping and countervailing duty laws and the WTO Uruguay Round Agreements. Additionally, Mr. Janzen defended the department in dispute settlement proceedings before the U.S. Court of International Trade, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and binational NAFTA Chapter 19 panels—including the first Extraordinary Challenge by the U.S. government to a NAFTA panel decision. While at the Department of Commerce, Mr. Janzen also represented the United States as a third party in a WTO dispute settlement proceeding involving Guatemala’s imposition of an antidumping duty order on imports of cement from Mexico.

Mr. Janzen received his B.A. cum laude in history and German from Bethel College in 1988 and his M.I.A. in 1992 from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, where he was associate editor of the Journal of International Affairs. Mr. Janzen received his J.D. from the George Washington University in 1996, where he was a member of the Moot Court Board. He is a member of the District of Columbia and New York bars.

Mr. Janzen participates in Akin Gump’s multidisciplinary climate change practice, focusing on the intersection of climate change law and policy with international trade, and contributes regularly to the firm’s industry-leading blog, www.ClimateIntel.com.
