David Billings heads the investment funds practice group in London, focusing principally on the representation of private investment funds and their sponsors.
For the past decade, Mr. Billings has advised both established and emerging managers in organizing and operating hedge funds and other alternative investment funds, including in the areas of private equity, distressed debt, emerging markets, real estate and fund of funds. He has extensive experience in the laws and regulations applicable to private investment funds in the United States, England and numerous other jurisdictions, and regularly counsels financial institutions and other fund sponsors regarding securities law compliance and other corporate matters.
Mr. Billings earned his B.A. with high honors in 1984 from the University of Virginia, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1987, after which he was awarded a Rotary Foundation scholarship studying European law at the University of Strasbourg. He is a member of the New York Bar.
Mr. Billings has been featured in An International Who's Who of Private Funds Lawyers and The Legal 500 – Who’s Who in the Law. He is a frequent speaker on investment funds and related topics at industry conferences in the United States and Europe, including, most recently, Alternative Investment Summit 2005 and Alternative Investment Summit 2004 in London, at which he spoke on "The Convergence of Hedge Funds and Private Equity Funds" and "Seeding Hedge Funds and Hedge Fund Managers."
