Deborah J. Newman focuses on complex commercial litigation, bankruptcy-related litigation and corporate and government investigations. Ms. Newman represents hedge funds, creditors' committees, private equity firms, public companies, special committees of boards and individuals in a variety of matters in state, federal and bankruptcy courts throughout the country.
In the past several years, Ms. Newman has handled the following representative matters—
- represented large publishing company in high-profile libel litigation
- represented major bondholder of Spectrum Brands in contested confirmation proceedings relating to valuation and reinstatement
- defended chief executive officer of a public company in connection with SEC investigation of alleged improper accounting and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act violations
- represented post-confirmation liquidating trust in breach of fiduciary duty litigation resulting in withdrawal of challenged transaction
- conducted independent audit committee investigation of potential securities and accounting violations by publicly traded company
- served as special litigation counsel to asbestos debtor in estimation litigation
- represented one of Russia's largest wireless carriers in federal securities litigation
- represented bankruptcy estate in litigation regarding post-closing asset purchase agreement disputes relating to working capital adjustments, management fee calculation and liability assumptions.
Ms. Newman graduated with honors from the University of Michigan in 1997 and received her J.D. from Columbia Law School in 2002. She is a member of the New York State Bar.
