David Lawrence’s practice focuses on intellectual property litigation and complex commercial litigation, including trade secret disputes, patent disputes, consumer class actions, contract disputes, business torts, products liability and other civil litigation matters.

Mr. Lawrence has bench and jury trial experience in state and federal courts and in arbitration. His litigation experience also includes mediations, hearings on dispositive motions, taking and defending depositions, drafting motions and briefs, and all areas of discovery. Mr. Lawrence also has appellate experience in the Texas Courts of Appeals, the Texas Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5^th Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Mr. Lawrence has represented clients in a broad range of high-stakes disputes, including—

• a global medical devices manufacturer in a patent infringement litigation in the District of Colorado and before the American Arbitration Association involving spinal implants
• a global medical device manufacturer in patent infringement litigation in the Western District of Texas involving aspiration catheter technology
• a start-up company in an IP dispute in the Northern District of Texas concerning the rightful inventor of a patented technology
• a manufacturer of microprocessors in litigation in the Western District of Texas defending allegations of misappropriation of trade secrets
• one of the largest global retailers in Texas state court prosecuting misappropriation of trade secrets claims against a former employee
• one of the largest global computer companies in several nationwide and statewide putative consumer class actions in Texas, California, Oklahoma and Arkansas state courts involving allegations of allegedly defective component devices and deceptive trade practices
• a global software company in a nationwide putative consumer class action in Northern District of Georgia involving allegations of allegedly defective software
• a national law firm in the defense of a class action in the Northern District of Texas and Texas state court involving aiding and abetting and conspiracy claims
• a leasing company in a nationwide putative class action in the Eastern District of Texas involving allegations of deceptive trade practices
• a leasing company defending an action by the Attorney General of Texas involving allegations of deceptive trade practices
• one of the largest on-line directory services prosecuting claims of fraud, conspiracy and RICO violations in the Northern District of Texas and before the American Arbitration Association against a former vendor
• one of the largest global financial services companies in arbitration before the American Arbitration Association involving a contractual dispute with a former client
• a private equity fund in Texas state court in defending against fraud and assisting breach of fiduciary duty claims
• a leading chemical company in litigation in Texas state court relating to its acquisition
• a broadcasting company in litigation in Texas state court relating to its acquisition of another broadcasting company
• a telecommunications technology company in the Southern District of Indiana defending allegations of fraud.

Mr. Lawrence received his B.B.A. with honors in finance in 1999 and his J.D. with honors in 2003 from the University of Texas. During law school, he served as an intern to Justice Mack Kidd of the 3rd District Court of Appeals of Texas. Mr. Lawrence is a member of the State Bar of Texas and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5^th Circuit, and the U.S. district courts for the Northern, Eastern, Southern and Western Districts of Texas.

Mr. Lawrence is a member of the American Bar Association, the Austin Bar Association and the Austin Young Lawyers’ Association. He also is a member of the Committee of Managers for the Town Lake YMCA, and he heads the Austin office’s volunteer efforts with Austin Partners in Education. Mr. Lawrence is also a graduate of Leadership Austin’s 2008 Emerge Program.

In addition, he is actively involved in providing pro bono legal services to indigent clients. Mr. Lawrence leads the Austin office’s involvement with American Gateways through which Akin Gump attorneys assist victims of domestic violence seeking U.S. citizenship under the Violence Against Women Act. His dedication to pro bono was recognized when he was named as the Austin office’s Pro Bono Attorney of the Year in 2006 and 2008. Mr. Lawrence is also an adjunct instructor at The University of Texas at Austin Professional Development Center.

In 2012, Mr. Lawrence was named a “Rising Star” in a survey of Texas lawyers designed to identify the top young lawyers in Texas.
