For 30 years, David R. McAtee has pursued a vigorous litigation practice that is both national and international in scope. Mr. McAtee’s practice is predominantly a federal trial and appellate practice involving complex business litigation issues. His specific areas of experience include civil litigation, complex business claims, complex insurance matters, federal and state antitrust actions, tender offers, lender liability claims, multidistrict and class-action litigation, and corporate and shareholder rights issues. Mr. McAtee has extensive experience in developing programs for antitrust compliance and in counseling, negotiations and administrative representation in matters involving the U.S. Department of Justice, the Federal Trade Commission and antitrust divisions of state attorneys general offices.
Mr. McAtee has lectured and published widely in the business litigation, lender liability and financial institutions complex litigation fields for such organizations as Southern Methodist University, the American Bar Association, the American Law Institute and South Texas College of Law.
Mr. McAtee has served on the firm’s executive and management committees. Prior to joining Akin Gump, Mr. McAtee was head of litigation and partner-in-charge at a large international law firm in Dallas. Prior to joining that firm, he was a litigation partner at another law firm for 22 years.
Mr. McAtee received his B.B.A. with honors from Baylor University in 1964 and his J.D. in 1967 from the University of Texas School of Law, where he served on the Honor Tribunal and the Hildebrand Moot Court. Following his graduation from law school, he served as law clerk to the Honorable Jack Pope, Supreme Court of Texas, from 1967 to 1968.
Mr. McAtee is admitted to practice before the U.S. courts of appeals for the 5th and 11th Circuits, the U.S. Tax Court and the U.S. district courts for the Northern, Southern and Eastern Districts of Texas. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas, the American Bar Association and the Bar Association for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit. He has previously served as chairman of the board of directors for Dallas Area Rapid Transit and as vice chairman for the Dallas City Planning Commission for the city of Dallas. He was a member of the University of Texas Alumni Law Association Executive Committee until 2006. He has been recognized since 2003 in an annual survey of his peers as a “Texas Super Lawyer.” Mr. McAtee is a former member of the board of directors of the Episcopal School of Dallas; the administrative board of the First United Methodist Church; and the board of directors of the Montessori School of Park Cities.
