Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP’s integrated team of private client services lawyers counsels a wide range of individual clients and their families, focusing on providing tax and estate planning advice to high-net-worth individuals. Often working closely with lawyers in other practices in the firm, such as tax and private equity, and with many of our foreign offices, the private client services practice advises on a broad array of wealth management issues, including estate planning and administration, business succession and intergenerational tax and succession planning, retirement planning and charitable giving.
We represent clients on complex transfer tax planning using, among other techniques, GRATs, family LLCs and FLPs and sales to “defective” grantor trusts for hedge fund and private equity fund principals, investors, executives and other high-net-worth clients. Additionally, the group advises fiduciaries on matters involving complex estate and trust administrations and litigation, as well as trust terminations.
In addition to fundamental estate planning techniques, we have considerable experience advising on complex tax issues facing U.S. clients who reside or have property situated in foreign jurisdictions and subject to both foreign and U.S. succession, property and tax laws. We also advise non-U.S.-resident individuals who have assets or family members in the United States or who are contemplating relocating to the United States regarding tax and succession planning, including offshore trust structures, asset protection and U.S. tax reporting obligations.
Our private client services practice prides itself on providing personal, partner-level attention to each client and maintaining long-term relationships with our clients and multiple generations of their family members.
