Practice & Background
Mr. Kim advises a wide range of major Korean and American companies seeking to conduct business in the United States and Korea. U.S. and Korean multinational businesses regularly seek his guidance to resolve disputes, to pursue sensitive cross-border business and investment opportunities and to gain an understanding of crucial political and policy issues affecting both nations.
Mr. Kim’s advice and counsel has also encompassed every aspect of U.S.-Korea relations. His counsel has been sought by both the governments of the United States and the Republic of Korea on many occasions, and he advises the government of Korea on various bilateral trade policy matters. Mr. Kim serves on the firm’s management committee. Prior to joining Akin Gump, Mr. Kim was a partner in the Washington office of an international law firm, where he managed the firm’s Korea practice.
Mr. Kim’s deep knowledge concerning bilateral trade and political issues between the United States and Korea has been recognized in various ways. Mr. Kim was appointed an adjunct professor at the Georgetown University Law Center to teach international trade law and has been a distinguished visiting professor at Yonsei University’s Graduate School of International Studies.
In July 1997, at the request of the White House, Mr. Kim traveled to North Korea on a fact-finding mission with Senator Sam Nunn and former U.S. Ambassador to Korea Jim Laney. In December 1997, at the request of the government of Korea, he served as special counsel to Korea at the height of that country’s financial crisis.
Mr. Kim has written a number of articles regarding Korean interests in the United States for professional and industry publications. Known for his vast knowledge of U.S.-Korea relations, he is often interviewed and quoted by major newspapers and professional publications in the United States and Korea. Since the early 1980s, his opinions, editorials and articles on U.S.-Korea relations have been frequently published in Korea’s leading newspapers.
Mr. Kim is a native of Seoul, Korea, and resides in Washington, D.C. He received an M.A. in international politics from Columbia University, where he was a Columbia fellow.
