Los Angeles - Downtown
In August 2011, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP expanded its presence in Los Angeles by opening an office in downtown Los Angeles. Working closely with the firm’s other practices, the lawyers in our downtown Los Angeles office concentrate on project finance and renewable energy, intellectual property and corporate matters with emphasis on the technology sector in the United States and overseas. With offices in both downtown Los Angeles and Century City, Akin Gump is well positioned to serve clients throughout Southern California, as well as across domestic and international borders.
Global Project Finance
Our global project finance team has been described in Chambers USA as a “major player” with “renowned capabilities in the energy sector.” Led from our downtown Los Angeles office, our global project finance practice comprises lawyers around the globe and is ideally suited to address all needs associated with energy projects—from project development issues involving construction, environmental, regulatory and tax considerations to the most difficult financing matters. Our global project finance team has significant experience counseling clients in the development and finance of some of the world’s largest and most complex projects involving both traditional and renewable energy, including wind, solar, hydroelectric, landfill gas, biomass and geothermal projects. We regularly represent project sponsors and developers, financial institutions, investors, manufacturers, technology companies, multilateral bodies, contractors, governments, sovereign nations and other participants in the development, financing, construction and operation of projects and facilities throughout the world. Our practice is recognized globally as a leader in the development and financing of energy projects.
Akin Gump’s intellectual property practice has been recognized by a wide range of industry and legal publications, including The American Lawyer, Chambers USA, The National Law Journal, IP Today and IP Law and Business. Our Los Angeles intellectual property lawyers focus on patent litigation, advising technology clients in a wide range of industries, including semiconductors, consumer electronics and satellite television, and appearing both in federal court and before the U.S. International Trade Commission. The teams that run our patent cases include trial lawyers with strong technical backgrounds. The combination of deep trial skills and technical acumen gives our litigators the insight into technology that allows them to connect with their clients and the minds behind the inventions, and effectively get to the core of the creativity behind the patents in dispute.
In separate annual surveys of general counsel and senior officers and directors of U.S. publicly traded companies, Akin Gump has been ranked by Corporate Board Member as one of the nation’s top 20 national corporate law firms. Collaborating with other practices throughout the firm, the lawyers in our downtown Los Angeles office handle cross-border corporate transactions, including corporate finance, M&A and takeovers in the United States and, most notably, Asia. We advise multinational public corporations, Chinese state-owned enterprises and medium and small privately held businesses in a broad range of industry segments, including high-tech, consumer products, infrastructure and city development, automotive, green energy and biotech.
With a winning combination of creative strategy and strong trial skills, our Los Angeles litigators routinely handle a diverse array of complex civil lawsuits. We represent a broad range of industries and Fortune 500 companies in matters involving contract disputes, business torts, intellectual property, labor and employment, securities, constitutional, and First Amendment issues, carrying on the firm’s tradition of a robust trial practice. We handle class action litigation as well as complex matters involving insurance, energy, and wage and hour litigation. Our litigation practice also includes a distinguished white collar criminal defense practice.
