Akin Gump Pro Bono Representation Leads to Recognition of American Indian Heritage Day in Texas

(Dallas) – Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP represented a group of American Indians in its successful bid to achieve recognition of American Indian Heritage Day in Texas. Heritage Day will serve to officially recognize the historic, cultural and social contributions American Indian communities and leaders have made to the state.
New legislation was signed by Gov. Rick Perry on May 10 that creates the first official observance of the state holiday on September 27, 2013, the last Friday in September, as called for in the law.
Jenny Walters, litigation counsel in Akin Gump’s Dallas office, and Hans Rickhoff, senior policy counsel in the firm’s Washington office, advised the American Indian Heritage Day Core Committee pursuing the recognition.
