Akin Gump’s California Appellate Practice Named Among “Top Appellate Practices”

(Los Angeles) Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP’s appellate practice has been selected by The Recorder as among its 2012 Top Appellate Practices in California, naming co-practice head Rex Heinke and partner L. Rachel Lerman as key players.
In selecting the practice for this honor, The Recorder focused on several key decisions in which Akin Gump appellate attorneys were instrumental in helping clients achieve victory. In Brinker v. Superior Court, Akin Gump client Brinker International won a critical victory at the California Supreme Court that clarified employers’ duties regarding meal and rest breaks. In Chau v. Starbucks, firm client Starbucks won a reversal of an $86 million wage-and-hour judgment, while in Uzyel v. Kadisha, the client won a California Court of Appeal affirmation of a $100 million award in a case involving a trustee’s breach of fiduciary duty.
Practices were selected by The Recorder through a nomination process as well as through confidential assessments and suggestions from knowledgeable practitioners consulted by Recorder editors.
This distinction closely follows the practice’s selection, for the fifth consecutive year, to The National Law Journal’s Appellate Hot List, which highlights law firms that are “turning in the most exemplary, cutting-edge advocacy” before the U.S. Supreme Court and other federal and state appellate courts across the country.
