Dino Barajas, a partner in Akin Gump’s global project finance practice, is quoted in the Solar Industry article “Mexico: North America’s New Frontier For Solar Power,” which looks at the growth of solar energy projects in Mexico. The article notes the Mexican government recently passed legislation that will have a major impact on the electricity sector, including reducing the legal and regulatory challenges for private off-takers and producers of solar electricity.

Barajas says the Mexican energy market has provided developers and investors with a stable and profitable investment environment since the 1992 introduction of private investment in the power sector. Appreciating the potential pitfalls inherent in the market and addressing them head-on during a project’s initial development phase, he says, can help separate successful developers and investors from the rest of the market. Barajas further noted that incorporating lessons learned in the past 20 years will also lead to increased rates of return and shorter financing cycles for prospective projects.
