London-based Akin Gump hedge funds tax principal Jon Hanifan was quoted on the results of a survey taken by 46 U.K. chief operating officers in February concerning a range of topics related to the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive, an EU law due to be implemented by July 22, 2013, that would put hedge funds and private equity funds under the supervision of an EU regulatory framework.

Regarding the “top 10 concerns about AIFMD” listed by the respondents, Hanifan said that he is surprised that remuneration only ranked fourth among top concerns, especially given the potential impact on limited liability partnerships, noting “I believe that this is in part a reflection of managers’ frustration—and fatigue—at the lack of certainty they are able to obtain about the Directive.” He added that this shouldn’t be interpreted as managers underestimating the challenges that the remuneration provisions pose.
