In Memoriam: Donald C. Alexander, 1921-2009

Donald C. Alexander

February 3, 2009

It is with great sadness that I announce the death of beloved Akin Gump partner Donald C. Alexander. Don died overnight after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Don joined Akin Gump in 1993. A tax expert extraordinaire who was sought after by some of the world's most prominent organizations for his sage tax advice, he was also a true American patriot; he served during World War II with the 14th Armored Division and subsequently was awarded the prestigious Silver Star and the Bronze Star for his valor and bravery.

An honors graduate of both Yale and Harvard Law and a devoted alumnus of both institutions, Don is perhaps best known for his many years of public service. In addition to serving as commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service during the 1970s, he served on the Commission on Federal Paperwork, on the Interior Department's Coal Leasing Commission, as director of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, as chairman of the Internal Revenue Service Exempt Organizations Advisory Group and as a commissioner of the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday Commission.

Don's dedication to Akin Gump and its work was evident through his avid participation in firm activities. He also was known for his kindness and respect towards all of his colleagues. We will miss him terribly.
