Akin Gump innovates: Representing an international oil and gas company in a series of complex transactions that ranked as among 2010’s most important and innovative M&A deals
In 2010, longtime Akin Gump client Bridas Corporation turned to a team led by partners Seth Molay and Steven Blakeley to guide them through what The Wall Street Journal would call two of the most important M&A deals of 2010: Bridas’ proposed $7.1 billion acquisition of BP's Pan American Energy stake and its $3.1 billion joint venture with China’s state-owned energy company CNOOC Ltd.
The deals were sophisticated and substantial enough to warrant recognition by the Financial Times as among the most innovative U.S. energy deals of 2011. In commending the deals, the Financial Times noted Akin Gump’s “communicative attitude and cross-jurisdictional expertise” as well as its creation of a legal structure that “was flexible enough to accommodate the needs of a wide range of stakeholders.”
