James England’s practice encompasses all aspects of real estate and general corporate law, with a particular focus on real estate development, finance, and M&A transactions. Mr. England has represented buyers, sellers, lenders and investors across a broad range of industry sectors from real estate development and Real Estate Investment Trusts, to leveraged finance, telecommunications, gaming and heavy industry.
His experience includes—
- represented banking and REIT clients in the acquisition of commercial property by negotiating and drafting purchase contracts, reviewing loan documents and preparing acquisition agreements
- represented private equity and hedge fund clients in complex leasing, zoning, platting and title matters by navigating them through the terms and conditions of development agreements and restrictive covenants
- negotiated dozens of engagement letters, consulting, confidentiality, procurement, employment agreements, as well as stock purchase and monitoring agreements
- represented clients in managing litigation and governmental inquiries in connection with leveraged buyout activities
- represented a leading private equity firm through the gaming licensing process in fifteen states, a pivotal gating event that opened the door to the leverage buyout of a major casino company.
Mr. England also advises corporate entities, investment fund managers and private equity funds on a wide variety of trade and finance transactions and has gained experience of many multi-jurisdictional transactions for large corporate clients.
Before joining Akin Gump, Mr. England worked as an associate at a large U.S. firm and also held the position of Associate General Counsel at TPG Capital, L.P., a leading private equity firm.
Mr. England received his J.D., cum laude, from the Southern Methodist University, Dedman School of Law in 2005, and his B.S.B.A., summa cum laude, from Saint Louis University in 2002. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas.
