Jonah E. McCarthy focuses on complex civil and white collar criminal litigation, as well as representation of corporations in internal and government investigations. Mr. McCarthy has represented companies in responding to Department of Justice subpoenas and participated in the conduct of an internal investigation for a major medical device manufacturer related to its sales and marketing practices, the federal Anti-Kickback statute and Medicare laws, and device safety.
Mr. McCarthy’s other matters have included representing a U.S. Congressman in an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Public Integrity Section, participating in the defense at trial of a client charged with insider trading, defending a foreign national in an SEC enforcement action, and second-chairing a federal criminal jury trial in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Mr. McCarthy’s pro bono work has included defending two college journalists in a defamation action and representing a Navy veteran in a federal Tort Claims Act case, which was appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Mr. McCarthy received his B.A. magna cum laude in political science in 2001 from the University of California, Irvine, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received his J.D. cum laude in 2004 from the Georgetown University Law Center. He is a member of the District of Columbia, New York, and Virginia Bars and is admitted to practice before a number of federal courts including the U.S. Supreme Court. He is the former co-chair of the Young Lawyers and Law Students Subcommittee of the Antitrust Litigation Committee of the ABA Section of Litigation.
