Jeffrey L. Stanfield retired as a senior partner of the firm at the end of 2007. As senior counsel, he continues to advise clients in his area of practice.
Mr. Stanfield formerly headed the firm’s global projects practice. In that capacity, he served on the firm’s management committee and and was deeply involved in strategic planning for the firm.
Mr. Stanfield has represented public and private clients for more than 30 years on major projects involving complex energy and environmental issues. In public service and private practice, he has participated extensively in planning, permitting and related development issues on major energy and transportation projects. In private practice, he has also counseled extensively on matters under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act; the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA); and the other federal environmental statutes.
Mr. Stanfield was a founding partner of Cutler & Stanfield, L.L.P., which merged with Akin Gump in November 2000. Under his guidance as managing partner for 12 years, Cutler & Stanfield became a leading environmental and project development law firm with matters throughout the United States.
Mr. Stanfield was associate undersecretary of the Department of Energy from 1979 to 1980, where he played a key role in budget and policy formulation for the outlay programs of the department, including the research, development and demonstration programs and the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, as well as defense and energy research programs. From 1977 to 1979, Mr. Stanfield served as the assistant to the secretary of energy for regulatory matters, in which capacity he was involved in major energy regulatory and policy issues, as well as related environmental issues.
Mr. Stanfield received his B.A. in 1971 from Old Dominion University and his J.D. in 1974 from the Vanderbilt University School of Law. He is a member of the District of Columbia and Tennessee bars.
