Joshua B. Waxman’s practice focuses on a variety of complex and class action labor and employment litigation and related matters.
Mr. Waxman has represented clients in connection with a variety of state and federal class action wage and hour lawsuits in various jurisdictions nationwide. Over the past several years, he has served as counsel for several large retailers in off-the-clock and misclassification class litigation across the country, including in California.
Mr. Waxman also has experience assisting with labor-management relations matters concerning collective bargaining and union organizing under the National Labor Relations Act. In 2004 he was counsel for a large manufacturing company at the first decertification causation hearing in the National Labor Relations Board’s history. In 2005 he was counsel to an employer that validated a decertification election despite the existence of unfair labor practices preceding the union’s request for an election.
Prior to joining Akin Gump, Mr. Waxman was a litigation associate in the New York office of Sullivan & Cromwell, where he concentrated in employment litigation and counseling. He frequently represented financial services industry clients in arbitration proceedings, including matters before the New York Stock Exchange, the National Association of Securities Dealers and the American Arbitration Association.
Mr. Waxman received his B.A. cum laude in government and English from Georgetown University in 1995. He also graduated with honors after successfully completing the University’s Government Honors program. He received his J.D. in 1998 from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he was a member of the Articles Review Board of the Virginia Law Review and served as president of the Virginia Employment and Labor Law Association. He is also a member of the University of Virginia Chapter of the Order of the Coif.
Mr. Waxman is a member of the District of Columbia, Maryland and New York Bars and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the 1st and 9th Circuits and the U.S. District Courts for the Southern, Eastern and Northern Districts of New York.
