Lester L. Hewitt is a recognized leader in the intellectual property bar, having practiced for more than 30 years. His litigation-oriented practice includes numerous complex lawsuits in which he has served as lead counsel, including proceedings related to patents and trademarks. Mr. Hewitt also counsels clients on a broad range of intellectual property issues in antitrust law and is often involved in patent/antitrust issues in litigation, such as standard-setting, patent and antitrust cases. Mr. Hewitt was a member of the firm’s management committee from 2002 to 2004.

In the course of his career, Mr. Hewitt has handled a substantial number of patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret cases for large and small clients. He has also been a mediator in intellectual property law disputes.

Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Hewitt worked as an examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Before joining Akin Gump, he was a name partner in a Houston intellectual property law firm.

Mr. Hewitt received his B.S.M.E. in 1965 and his LL.B. cum laude in 1968 from the University of Houston. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas. He is a past president of the Houston Intellectual Property Law Association, has served on the boards of the Houston Bar Association and the State Bar of Texas, and is a past treasurer of the American Intellectual Property Law Association. He has also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Houston Law Center in intellectual property law.

Mr. Hewitt has been a frequent speaker in the areas of patent, trademark and antitrust matters and has authored articles on intellectual property law topics. He has been recognized for more than 10 years in The Best Lawyers in America and was named in a survey of his peers as a Texas “Super Lawyer” in both 2004 and 2005. He also has been recognized by Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business (2008–2011), The International Who’s Who of Trademark Lawyers 2006 and Who’s Who Legal USA: Trademarks (2006).
