Lawrence L. Lamade has extensive experience in advising business enterprises in implementing and administering employee benefit plans, particularly qualified and nonqualified deferred compensation and stock compensation plans, and medical, life insurance and other welfare benefit programs. In addition, he has represented retirement and welfare plans, including Taft-Hartley and church plans, providing advice to the trustees of these plans about their fiduciary duties in structuring investments and interpreting the prohibited transaction rules involving party-in-interest dealings. In connection with Mr. Lamade's plan representation, he has arbitrated numerous disputes regarding eligibility for benefits, in particular with regard to Taft-Hartley plans. He has advised clients on the implementation and perpetuation of benefits in strike situations and actively participated in negotiating and implementing benefit sections of collective bargaining agreements.
In addition to his general ERISA practice, Mr. Lamade has assisted businesses in implementing creative strategies designed to make the provision of employee benefits more economical. These strategies include self-funded plans and the use of captive insurance companies. The implementations of these strategies have been applied to retirement, medical and life insurance plans.
Mr. Lamade began his legal career at another law firm and left as partner in 1988 to serve as general counsel of the Department of the Navy. From 1989 to 2000, he was counsel and then a partner at another international firm.
Mr. Lamade received his B.A. from Princeton University in 1969 and his J.D. from Georgetown University in 1975. From 1969 to 1972, Mr. Lamade served as an officer in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Lamade is a member of the District of Columbia and Maryland bars.
