Ladd Wiley is a resident consultant at Akin Gump. Mr. Wiley represents clients in the area of health policy, medical technology and consumer privacy. Mr. Wiley represents integrated health care delivery systems, bioscience companies, insurers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, medical device manufacturers and consumer marketing firms.

In his health policy work, Mr. Wiley provides legal and policy advice and advocacy relating to all aspects of health policy. Mr. Wiley was particularly involved in numerous provisions of the health reform law, and currently assists clients in reform implementation and potential legislative adjustments. Mr. Wiley is particularly active in advising clients on delivery system reform issues.

In his medical technology work, Mr. Wiley assists bio-defense and emerging infectious disease companies in the growing area of government funding of medical countermeasure development. In this multidisciplinary practice, Mr. Wiley works with a team that includes the firm’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulatory counsel and government contract lawyers.

In his consumer privacy work, Mr. Wiley represents companies in the newly developing legal area of federal regulation of the online and offline collection of consumer information.

Mr. Wiley has played a key role in building a number of successful public policy coalitions, and currently serves as executive director of the Alliance for a Stronger FDA, a 180+ member coalition—spanning not-for-profit consumer, patient and research advocacy organizations; associations representing health professions and industry; and individual companies—working to strengthen FDA’s appropriated budget. Mr. Wiley is also an active participant in the Healthcare Quality Coalition, a group of providers throughout the nation dedicated to the concept of high-quality, low-cost care.

Prior to his work with Akin Gump, Mr. Wiley served as the principal deputy general counsel and counselor to the secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Mr. Wiley began his work in government as chief counsel to Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson.

Mr. Wiley is active in Wisconsin politics, and serves on the board of Wisconsin-based think tank, the New American Policy Institute. Mr. Wiley is also a member of the board of Futures Group Global Outreach, a not-for-profit international development firm based in North Carolina.
