Matthew C. Bate practices international arbitration and litigation, with a particular focus on complex, high-value disputes involving foreign direct investment, major infrastructure projects, joint ventures and cross-border transactions in the energy, mining, telecommunications, technology, financial and transportation sectors.
Mr. Bate has extensive experience advising and representing multinational corporations, governmental entities and individuals in arbitrations conducted under the rules of the American Arbitration Association (AAA/ICDR), the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC) the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and other arbitral venues, from the initiation of proceedings through to the enforcement stage. He is also qualified to handle international litigation matters in the U.S. courts.
Mr. Bate practiced with leading international law firms in New York and Paris before establishing residence in Geneva in 2007. He is an adjunct lecturer at the Geneva Masters in International Dispute Settlement (MIDS) Program, published author and active member of the Swiss Arbitration Association (ASA) and other international bar associations.
Mr. Bate speaks fluent French and German in addition to his native English.
