Melanie G. Cowart focuses her practice primarily in the areas of commercial and intellectual property litigation.
Ms. Cowart is currently a member of the San Antonio office’s diversity committee.
Ms. Cowart received her B.A. in sociology in 1974 from the University of Missouri and her J.D. in 1983 from the Saint Louis University School of Law. Following law school, Ms. Cowart worked at the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office, the Legal Aid Society for the District of Columbia, Copeland Franco Screws and a trial-focused law firm. She joined Akin Gump in 1996.
Ms. Cowart is a member of the Texas Bar. She is admitted to practice before the U.S. district courts for the Northern, Southern and Western Districts of Texas and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. She is also a member of the San Antonio Bar Association and the Bexar County Women’s Bar Association, and serves on the board of directors of two charitable organizations: the Roseville Housing Trust of San Antonio and the Kids Sports Network. She is an alumni member of Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit Honor Society.
