Matthew R. Varzally represents clients in commercial litigation matters, with experience in actions involving ERISA benefit claims, insurer/provider disputes, business torts, professional liability, securities fraud, and other complex claims. Mr. Varzally has participated in trials and hearings at both the state and federal level, during which he has conducted lay and expert witness examinations and oral argument. He also has litigated several injunction-related and class action matters.
Mr. Varzally’s recent representations include—
- defending health insurers, managed care plans and TPAs from member and provider lawsuits asserted under ERISA, state statutory and common law theories
- defending life insurers from class actions alleging the improper calculation and processing of benefits
- defending an auditing firm from claims of securities fraud, negligent misrepresentation and related causes of action in separate cases brought by a bankruptcy trustee, an investor class and an international bank
- second-chairing a two-week federal jury trial and obtaining a plaintiff’s verdict on copyright, contract and tort claims in a case involving proprietary real estate website materials.
Mr. Varzally received his B.A. summa cum laude in political science in 2001 from American University, where he graduated first in his class in the School of Public Affairs and also was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received his J.D. cum laude in 2004 from the Georgetown University Law Center, where he was a member of the Georgetown Journal of Law and Public Policy as well as the Federalist Society.
Mr. Varzally is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
