2009 Appleseed Pro Bono Leader Award

Steven H. Schulman received the Pro Bono Leader Award from Appleseed. In honoring Mr. Schulman, Appleseed praised him as “one of the country’s leading immigration attorneys,” citing his work on the organization’s Assembly Line Injustice report, a groundbreaking project to reform U.S. immigration courts, and lauding his experience and insight as “invaluable resources.”

2009 Human Rights Initiative of North Texas Angel Freedom Award

Human Rights Initiative of North Texas (HRI) presented Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld with a 2009 Angel of Freedom Award on November 2.  The Dallas nonprofit agency praised the firm for providing “considerable pro bono legal resources” to the organization. In addition, HRI recognized Akin Gump’s participation on HRI’s Pro Bono Committee.

2008 KIPP “Beyond Z” Award

The KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) charter schools honored Akin Gump as an outstanding contributor to its mission of educating low-income children and getting them to college.

2008 National Council for Adoption “Buckaroo” Award

A team led by Washington office senior attorney Andrea Vavonese helped NCFA advocate for changes in paternal notification laws that block successful adoptions. The team was given a guitar signed by NCFA spokesperson, and country music star, Rodney Atkins.

2008 Tahirih Justice Center Law Firm of the Year Award

The Tahirih Justice Center, based in Falls Church, VA, honored Akin Gump for its representation of immigrant women and girls and also for its assistance on a variety of advocacy issues for this vulnerable population.

2008 “Big Mover” in The American Lawyer Magazine’s pro bono rankings

Akin Gump improved by 56 places from 2006 to 2007 among the 200 largest U.S. law firms.

2008 National Legal Aid & Defender Association Beacon of Justice Award

Akin Gump was Honored for Providing Significant Pro Bono Representation to People on Death Row

2007 Human Rights First Marvin Frankel Award

For Akin Gump’s firm-wide representation of refugees, advocacy on issues involving bars to asylum and counsel to Human Rights First.

2007 Legal Aid Society of New York Pro Bono Award

Christopher Kercher and Robert J. Boller received this award for their work representing an indigent man in his eviction proceedings against the New York City Housing Authority.

2007 DC Bar Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year

Duncan Stevens received this award for his role as class counsel in Lightfoot v. District of Columbia, a case on behalf of individuals whose workers’ compensation benefits were wrongfully terminated, which Duncan brought to the firm in August 2007.

2007 Discover the Heart of Washington Award, Cultural Tourism DC

The Washington Office received this award for pro bono service to Cultural Tourism DC, which promotes cultural activities and economic development in the District’s neighborhoods.

2007 Southern Center for Human Rights Frederick Douglass Human Rights Award

Akin Gump received this award for its work protecting human rights at Guantanamo Bay (our attorneys wrote significant amicus briefs in the Hamdan and Hamdi Supreme Court cases).

2007 State Bar of Texas Legal Assistance to Military Personnel Project Commendation

Akin Gump received this award for providing critical legal services to active duty military personnel.

2007 National Legal Aid & Defender Association Beacon of Justice Award

Akin Gump received this award for providing pro bono representation to detainees at Guantanamo Bay.

2006 “Texas Appleseed” Good Apple Award

The firm's Texas and Washington, D.C., lawyers received this award for their analyses and recommendation of ways to increase access to the commercial banking system for low-income immigrants.

2006 State Bar of Texas Frank W. Newton Award

All four of the firm’s Texas offices received this award for their longstanding commitment to pro bono service.

Akin Gump received this award for assisting the organization with its newsletter and other institutional matters.

2006 National Legal Aid & Defender Association Exemplar Award

Mark J. MacDougall received this award for his career-long commitment to providing pro bono trial defense to those facing the death penalty.
