Robin M. Schachter’s practice focuses on employee benefits, executive compensation, ERISA, tax-exempt organizations and related federal tax matters. He designs and implements qualified retirement plans, non-qualified deferred compensation and incentive compensation arrangements, executive compensation arrangements, fringe benefits and health plans.
Mr. Schachter also consults on tax and ERISA compliance requirements, including tax-qualification requirements, unrelated business income taxes, fiduciary responsibility and continuation coverage (COBRA) rules applicable to group health plans. He has extensive experience with employee stock ownership plan design and compliance matters for both C corporations and S corporations. His employee benefits practice includes fiduciary responsibility, prohibited transactions and benefit claims litigation matters, as well as allied areas of labor, tax and securities law. He has served companies in the financial institutions, sports and entertainment, manufacturing, apparel, computer and high-technology, retail, oil and gas, real estate, hospital and medical, and professional services industries.
Mr. Schachter has also been a frequent lecturer and speaker on employee benefits topics to various professional and business groups, including at programs sponsored by the American Bar Association, the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the California Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Tax Executives Institute, the University of Southern California Tax Institute and the Georgetown University Law Center.
Mr. Schachter received his B.A. from American University in 1974, his J.D. from the Catholic University of America in 1977 and his LL.M. in taxation from Georgetown University in 1980. He is a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association and served as chair of the Employee Benefits Subcommittee, Section of Taxation, from 1993 through 1994. In addition, he is a member of the American Bar Association Section on Taxation. He is a member of the California and District of Columbia Bars, and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and the U.S. Tax Court.
