Tom Evans is a commercial litigator and arbitrator with a broad range of experience in international arbitration, litigation, mediation and various other forms of alternative dispute resolution.

Mr. Evans has wide experience of complex multi-jurisdictional disputes, and particular experience in emerging markets telecoms and energy industry disputes. Representative matters include—


Telecoms

  • acting for a major telecommunications company in a series of worldwide disputes, arising from an IPO and subsequent $5 billion share swap transaction with another telecommunications entity, including:
    • ICC arbitration regarding breaches of contract under the transaction documents
    • LCIA arbitrations against former minority shareholders
    • parallel proceedings in the local courts of the target company
    • various satellite litigation proceedings relating to the overarching arbitrations
  • acting for a major telecommunications company in defending a series of class actions inherited from a target company post-acquisition, in which the damages sought were approximately $3 billion

Energy & Natural Resources

  • representing a power provider in Commercial Court proceedings regarding the ownership of CO2 emission permits
  • acting for a major infrastructure company in a dispute with both a state nuclear authority and its own joint venture partner regarding the construction of a €3 billion next-generation nuclear power plant
  • advising a state-owned oil company in €1.5 billion breach of warranty claim
  • advising a construction company in a dispute with a state-owned oil company regarding a $100 million bunkering facility
  • representing a manufacturer of renewable energy technology in a dispute with suppliers and joint venture partners
  • advising a state-owned oil company in a dispute with a trading partner regarding oil swap contracts

General Commercial

  • advising an agribusiness conglomerate in an ICC arbitration claim for damages arising out of the failure of a major construction project
  • assisting a national government in pursuing an ICSID claim against a fraudulent investor
  • acting for an institutional investor against a fund manager whose unilateral trades had incurred significant losses for the investor
  • advising a client in a major investigation by the Serious Fraud Office of an African nation, where the penalties sought were in the region of $800 million
  • advising various banking clients on money laundering claims and investigations
  • acting for a food wholesaler in relation to an LCIA arbitration for breach of contract against a global commodity supplier
  • advising various banking and manufacturing clients on wide-ranging reputation management issues.

Mr. Evans has advised clients across Europe, Russia/CIS, MENA and South East Asia in regard to disputes involving such jurisdictions as Indonesia, Mauritius, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Ghana, Bermuda, UAE, Qatar, Lebanon, Kazakhstan, Russia, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Italy, as well as the courts of Texas, Georgia, New York and Massachusetts.

Mr. Evans joined Akin Gump in 2009. He was previously an associate at the London office of a large U.S. law firm and a trainee solicitor at major UK-headquartered firm.

Mr. Evans received his B.A. from Oxford University in 2000, and his PGDL and LPC from BPP Law School in 2003 and 2004 respectively. He qualified as a solicitor in 2007.
