Thomas C. Goldstein is a co-leader of Akin Gump’s litigation management committee.
Mr. Goldstein’s practice is focused on Supreme Court litigation. He has argued 21 cases before the Court on a diverse array of federal law questions.
In addition to practicing law, Mr. Goldstein teaches Supreme Court litigation at Stanford Law School and Harvard Law School. Mr. Goldstein also founded and publishes SCOTUSblog, which is widely regarded as one of the nation’s premier legal Internet sites.
Mr. Goldstein has developed knowledge in several subject matter areas. He regularly litigates and lectures on questions of federal patent law. Mr. Goldstein frequently advises clients, litigates and consults on legislative matters relating to the First Amendment. And he regularly represents parties in questions relating to the game of poker, including its lawfulness as a matter of federal and state law.
Mr. Goldstein has been repeatedly recognized as a leading member of the bar. For example, Legal Times named him one of the “90 Greatest Washington Lawyers of the Last 30 Years” and praised him for “transforming the practice” before the Supreme Court. He is included on the most recent lists of the 100 most influential lawyers in America (National Law Journal); the 50 most influential people in Washington, D.C. (GQ); the leading appellate lawyers in Washington, D.C. (Legal Times); and 30 best lawyers in Washington, D.C. (Washingtonian).
In addition, Mr. Goldstein has been hailed as a leading young lawyer. Among many recognitions, The National Law Journal twice named him one of the nation’s leading attorneys under the age of 40 and The American Lawyer recognized him as one of the nation’s top 45 attorneys under the age of 45.
Mr. Goldstein is involved with a number of professional organizations. He serves on the board of trustees of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and the board of legal advisors of the Washington Legal Foundation. He was appointed by the president of the ABA to its Standing Committee on Amicus Curiae Briefs, and he also serves as the vice chair of the Amicus Committee of the ABA Intellectual Property Section. In addition, Mr. Goldstein serves on the board of advisors of the Georgetown University Supreme Court Institute.
Mr. Goldstein received his B.A. from the University of North Carolina in 1992 and his J.D. summa cum laude from American University’s Washington College of Law in 1995, after which he clerked for the Honorable Patricia M. Wald of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. He is a member of the District of Columbia and Maryland bars.
Before joining Akin Gump, Mr. Goldstein was a partner at Goldstein & Howe, the firm he founded in 1999. He previously practiced law at two other law firms.
