OverRuled

OverRuled helps practitioners sustain compliance in a world of complex international trade rules. Akin designed this award-winning interactive platform to alleviate the burden of over-regulation for in-house lawyers and compliance practitioners. Its initial launch provides a suite of tools across two modules—U.S. sanctions and U.S. export controls.

OverRuled provides heat maps and dynamic graphs, some of which feed directly from government sources, to help users visualize raw agency data and assess risks both qualitatively and quantitatively. It allows users to search for and analyze previously unsearchable enforcement actions and identify agency-issued guidance.

Most groundbreaking is the OverRuled Predictor, which uses a machine learning-based data model that is trained on the sanctions enforcement action data already stored in the research database to predict—with approximately 90% accuracy—a potential penalty outcome that the U.S. government may assess based on the specific facts of our users’ cases.

With the rapidly evolving legal and regulatory developments resulting from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, OverRuled prelaunched a subscription-based service for Akin clients to track related changes. The OverRuled Russia Trade Controls Resource Center has more than 200 users and through Akin’s network of offices and local counsel contacts, now covers legal developments not only in the United States, but also in Australia, Canada, the European Union, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.

In recognition of Akin’s work in launching OverRuled, the Financial Times awarded OverRuled “standout” status in its Digitising Legal Services category of the 2022 North America Innovative Lawyers report. Akin also won in the Innovation through Technology: Private Practice category at The Middle East Legal Awards 2022, for its innovation through OverRuled.
