2L Summer Associate Positions

2L Summer Associate positions are currently open in our Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York and Washington, D.C. offices.

Akin Gump summer associates work on real matters for real clients. With training, mentorship, teamwork and social activities, you will receive a realistic and meaningful picture of firm life. You will gain in-depth exposure to the firm’s practice and hands-on experience with clients and work that interests you. We also offer special opportunities to attend depositions, hearings, witness interviews and client meetings. Summer associates also participate in pro bono projects through organizations with which Akin Gump has a pro bono partnership. These projects are geared to our summer associates’ interests and maximize front-line responsibility while ensuring appropriate supervision from experienced attorneys.

Applicants must be enrolled in and in good standing at an ABA accredited law school with an anticipated graduation date of December 2018, or spring 2019 at the time of application. Akin Gump seeks motivated candidates with outstanding academic credentials, overall achievement, leadership and interpersonal skills and work experience. In addition, the firm looks for candidates who demonstrate the firm’s core competencies: ownership, professional excellence, service and teamwork and client focus.

Akin Gump/Robert Strauss Diversity Scholarship

Applicants may apply for an Akin Gump/Robert Strauss Diversity Scholarship in either the Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York or Washington, D.C. offices.

Akin Gump and the firm’s founding partner, Robert Strauss, recognize that a workforce comprised of attorneys and staff from diverse social, racial, economic and cultural backgrounds is an important component in providing outstanding client service. The firm is continually seeking candidates who demonstrate excellence and who can bring diverse viewpoints and experiences to the firm and we have developed the Strauss Scholarship to advance this effort.  The scholarships will be awarded to students who evidence their commitment to diversity in the legal profession, who demonstrate excellence and who can bring diverse viewpoints and experiences to the firm. In addition to the financial award, the scholarships also provide mentoring from firm attorneys and a paid second year summer associate position in the firm’s Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York or Washington, D.C. office. office.

Applicants must have excellent undergraduate and law school academic performance and evidence of leadership abilities, personal and professional accomplishments, and a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity. To be eligible to be considered for the Strauss Scholarship, applicants must be enrolled in and in good standing at an ABA accredited law school with an anticipated graduation date of December 2018, or spring 2019 at the time of application. In order to receive the scholarship, recipients must participate in and complete the firm’s summer associate program following their second year of law school. Applicants may not be the recipient of a similar diversity award from another law firm.

How to Apply

Applications for the program will be accepted, and considered on a rolling basis, between July 1, 2017 and September 29, 2017. Law students interested in the Strauss Scholarship must submit the following materials in order to be considered: a completed application form (stating office preference); current resume and law school transcript; a personal statement (no more than 750 words) describing the applicant’s demonstrated academic and leadership achievements and commitment to diversity; a legal writing sample; and contact information for three academic or professional references.  Applications may be submitted by email to the recruitment contact in for that particular office.  Click here for a list of contacts.

Intellectual Property 2L Summer Associate

IP 2L Summer Associate positions are currently open in the firm’s Dallas, Houston, Irvine, Philadelphia, New York and Washington, D.C. offices.

Akin Gump's high-tech IP practice in the firm's Dallas, Houston, Irvine, New York and Washington, D.C. offices seeks 2L summer associate candidates who have earned technical degrees (e.g., Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, etc.).  Please attach a resume, undergraduate transcript, graduate transcript (if applicable) and law school transcript (unofficial transcripts are acceptable).  Undergraduate and graduate transcripts should be uploaded together as one document.  It is preferred, but not required, that a student be qualified to sit for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office examination.
