Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP recognizes that a strong orientation and integration program is key to helping our lawyers start off on the right foot. These programs are strategically designed to guide important transitions at milestones in our attorneys’ careers.
Our new associates spend their first week at the firm getting oriented to their offices and practices and learning about the Core Competencies. As with all of the firm’s training programs, the Core Competencies frame the content of our orientation program. New associates will learn goal-setting basics and take ownership of their career path from day one. They will spend time with experienced practitioners, learning the ropes and developing resources for navigating work assignments. Early training will also focus on critical business skills such as oral and written communication, time management and client service. Formal trainings will continue with additional topics throughout the year.
Your integration is only complete when you feel like Akin Gump is your firm too. You will transition from thinking about your work and how people at Akin Gump work to focus on how “we” work.
Akin Gump’s counsel program allows associates who are on partnership track to be promoted to counsel at their sixth year of practice. Counsel are given a higher level of responsibility on matters and with clients.
As counsel promotion comes with new responsibilities, we want to make sure our attorneys know what they are. In early spring each year, newly promoted counsel from around the globe gather for a two-and-a half day orientation that includes an address by the chairman of the firm, communication skills training with an emphasis on leading teams and giving feedback and business development skills training to help counsel grow and develop their professional network as they advance in their careers.
We want new lateral attorneys to feel right at home as soon as they arrive. With the guidance of individuals invested in their success, laterals develop the resources they need for their practice during the orientation process. The firm is committed to ensuring that all laterals have the tools to succeed. This commitment extends beyond the attorneys’ first week at the firm and remains a long-term pledge throughout the attorneys’ career.
