Rupert is an associate in the commercial tax group of the London office. He studied Classics at Queens’ College, Cambridge, before completing the GDL at City Law School and the LPC at the University of Law. He qualified from the training programme in September 2016.
“I was attracted by the firm’s small trainee intake, which means that from day one, trainees are given extensive opportunities to take on a high level of responsibility and work directly with very knowledgeable partners. The quality of the work was also a big draw – my work experience prior to joining the programme had given me a particular interest in finance and restructuring, and Akin Gump is an industry leader in these areas.
Over the course of my training contract, I completed six-month seats in litigation, financial restructuring, tax and corporate. Trainees meet regularly with the graduate recruitment team to discuss their own career goals, which ensures that trainees’ seat preferences are taken into account and that the subject of qualification is raised early. Since the teams at Akin Gump are relatively small, trainees quickly come to feel part of the firm, and this makes it easy to approach associates for advice and support.
I believe that the first-hand experience of complex and high-value transactions which I have gained during my Akin Gump training contract has given me an excellent grounding for a successful career in the law.”
