Latin America Overview
As countries in Latin America and the Caribbean continue to privatize state-owned assets, restructure their economies and open the doors to foreign investment in virtually all sectors of their economies, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is well positioned to work on all types of transactions in the region. Not only do we possess the requisite specialized legal knowledge and experience, we also have numerous bilingual and trilingual attorneys at Akin Gump, many of whom grew up or have spent significant time in Latin America and the Caribbean. Our ability to conduct business in Spanish and Portuguese equates to better efficiency and lower costs.
We have represented governments in the privatization of assets and foreign investors in the acquisition of state-owned assets being privatized, such as electric companies in Argentina, Colombia and Peru and oil properties in Peru. We also regularly represent private investors in the acquisition and disposition of assets and the establishment of joint ventures throughout the region. We have had significant involvement in this regard in Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico.
Public and private companies in a wide variety of businesses—including retailing, franchising, manufacturing, chemicals, energy, technology, telecommunications, health care, defense contracting, insurance and financial services—seek our counsel when expanding into Latin America and the Caribbean. We manage every aspect of sophisticated corporate transactions, from the initial stages involving advice as to appropriate structure strategies and tactics through the preparation and negotiation of the necessary transaction and financing documents. We also advise in all facets of a company’s exit strategy from the region.
Our mergers and acquisitions and securities practice in Latin America and the Caribbean has worked hand in hand with our project development practice. We have represented foreign investors in mergers and acquisitions throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. We have also represented numerous corporate issuers of debt and securities, principally in Argentina, Brazil and Mexico.
