(New York) – International Employment Lawyer has selected Akin Gump labor and employment counsel Dustin Stark for its inaugural Tomorrow’s Leaders list of the future leaders of labor and employment law around the globe.

IEL notes that the 29 honorees, from 19 countries, were selected “based on their involvement in high-profile or innovative disputes, projects, or deals during their first decade of practice, and their expert opinions on the future challenges set to rock the world of work.”

IEL published profiles of each of the honorees. Some highlights from Mr. Stark’s:

  • Why employment law? “There is a human element to labour and employment law that first drew me in and has kept me interested and engaged throughout my career. I enjoy helping navigate relationships between employers and employees, working on cases with interesting facts that require creative legal analysis, and problem solving for clients with different workforces and operations across different industries.”
  • Most significant COVID-related labor and employment trend? “The large-scale adoption of remote and hybrid workplace business models, while first born out of necessity, is likely to have staying power and a lasting impact on the landscape of labour and employment law for years to come. In response to this structural change, we are seeing a trend of employers being faced with many ‘square peg in a round hole’ challenges.”
  • Biggest L&E risk to business? “One of the biggest labour and employment risks facing business in the near future is the potential unexpected applicability of a different jurisdiction’s laws to its workforce. In many situations, the location where an employee performs work determines which laws govern the employee’s employment. Therefore, the prevalence of remote workforces and enhanced worker mobility has increased the probability that employees are covered by the laws of a state or country other than the one where an employer is headquartered.”
