Akin Gump and Other U.S. Law Firms Again Call for Continued Funding of Legal Services Corporation

(New York) – For the second straight year, Akin Gump has joined more than 180 law firms from across the United States signing on to a letter to Congress calling for the continued funding of the Legal Services Corporation (LSC), after the Trump administration once again proposed defunding the organization.
President Trump’s fiscal year 2019 budget released in February proposes doing away with funding for the LSC, which would eliminate critical federal grants to legal aid organizations. The LSC is the single-largest funder of civil legal aid in the United States and is responsible for ensuring there is legal aid funding available in every county of every state.
Last year, thanks to the collective voices of the law firm leaders, in-house counsel and nonprofit organizations, Congress rejected with bipartisan support the White House’s proposal to eliminate funding for the LSC, funding it at $410 million, up from the previous year’s level of $385 million.
