On December 6, 2011, at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP was honored by the National Legal Aid & Defender Association with the organization’s Beacon of Justice Award. This year’s award acknowledges “law firms that have innovative public-private partnerships that protect equal justice for all through appellate litigation.” Akin Gump is one of only 14 firms recognized nationwide with this distinction.
R. Bruce McLean, chairman of Akin Gump, stated, “The support of those who cannot afford legal representation has been a pillar of the firm since its founding more than 65 years ago. I am extremely proud of the Akin Gump attorneys whose tireless efforts helped lead to this honor.”
Akin Gump pro bono partner Steven H. Schulman noted, “I’m very gratified that NLADA has selected our pro bono appellate efforts for recognition this year—appellate representation is particularly important for closing the justice gap in this country. Our appellate attorneys are among the best in their field, and their work before courts across the country—including the Supreme Court—has not only helped our clients, but has also developed important legal principles that improve our justice system.”
Founded 100 years ago, NLADA is an association of legal professionals and organizations dedicated to providing legal services to low-income people in America.
