Akin Gump Honored by Washington Lawyers’ Committee with Outstanding Achievement Award in Public Education

(Washington, D.C.) – At its annual awards luncheon, held on June 22, the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs recognized Akin Gump with the Outstanding Achievement Award in the area of public education.

As the organization noted, “For more than 20 years, the firm has partnered with Tyler Elementary School as part of the Committee’s Public Education Project. Their latest project involved helping their school PTA apply for matching funds from the Committee’s Parent Engagement Pilot Program.”

WLC cited other programs under the auspices of Akin Gump’s partnership with Tyler, including funding for field and ski trips and for school events, supporting the school’s arts curriculum, assisting with funding and constructing a hands-on outdoor classroom, providing guidance to the school’s PTA as it established a 501(c)(3) for fundraising, and helping to fund a major library renovation.

The Committee also spotlighted the firm’s support of Tyler students participating in the D.C.-wide GeoPlunge geography competition, its assistance in coaching high school students in citywide and regional moot court competitions and its participation in a Working Group that published the Nonprofit Fundraising guide and Toolkit for DC Public Schools, among other efforts.

Akin Gump Washington, D.C. partner in charge Anthony Pierce and firmwide pro bono partner Steven Schulman attended the awards ceremony on the firm’s behalf.
