Akin Gump Lauded for Community Outreach

(Dallas, Texas) – In recognition of its extensive community outreach efforts, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP has received the 2005 Law Firm of the Year for Extraordinary Pro Bono Services Award, the 2005 Law Firm Community Builder Award and honors from the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the firm announced today.
On October 6 the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program, a joint venture of the Dallas Bar Association and Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas, presented Akin Gump with the Law Firm of the Year for Extraordinary Pro Bono Services Award. In addition, Erin Sears, a litigation associate in Akin Gump’s Dallas office, was named Outstanding New Pro Bono Lawyer. The firm’s Dallas pro bono initiatives are led by tax partner Daniel J. Micciche and litigator Diane P. Couchman.
On October 19 Texas C-BAR (Texas Community Building with Attorney Resources) presented Akin Gump with the Law Firm Community Builder Award in recognition of the firm’s extensive work in Texas on behalf of individuals and small businesses affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Akin Gump was the only law firm to receive an award from Texas C-BAR.
In addition, at the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Akin Gump received third-place honors in the Largest Corporate Team category, with 185 team members. More than 30,000 individuals participated in this year’s race, which was held on October 15 in Dallas.
Nearly 90 percent of Akin Gump’s Dallas attorneys serve in leadership positions on the boards of civic organizations or provide pro bono legal services through organizations such as Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program (DVAP), Landlord Tenant Clinic, Human Rights Initiative, Texas C-BAR and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA).
