The roundtable discussion was held at the Council of the Federation, the upper chamber of the Federal Assembly—the parliament of the Russian Federation—on June 4, 2013, and was attended by a number of Russian dignitaries, including:

  • Andrei Klishas, the chairman of the Council of the Federation Committee on Constitutional Legislation, Legal and Judicial Affairs and Civil Society Development
  • Vladimir Yedalov, member of the Federation Council
  • representatives of the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation, the Accounts Chamber of the Russian Federation, the Russian President’s Commissioner for Protection of Entrepreneurs’ Rights, the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs and the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry as well as of the business and legal communities.

Akin Gump was invited by long-standing client OJSC Surgutneftegas to speak on the amendments to the Russian Civil Code from the perspective of a leading international law firm. Mr. Kondratchik spoke about the proposed amendments to the Russian Civil Code relating to the basic concepts of corporate law, particularly on the definition of affiliation, corporate control, liability of controlling legal entities and the potential effect of such amendments on the legal environment in Russia.

Among the panelists were Professor Yevgeny Sukhanov, deputy chairman of the Russian President’s Council for Coding and Improving Civil Laws and Head of the Civil Law Department at Lomonosov Moscow State University and Alexander Makovsky, deputy chairman of the Russian President’s Council for Coding and Improving Civil Laws.
