(Los Angeles) – Four members of Akin Gump’s entertainment practice have been selected for inclusion in Variety’s 2019 Legal Impact Report. Practice head Christopher Spicer, along with fellow partners P. John Burke, Marissa Román Griffith and Alissa Miller, were all named to the list, which recognizes the top attorneys in the media and entertainment industries.
Variety notes that the four represent “powerhouse financial institutions … in various content financings.” Some of their specific matters have included representing RatPac-Dune Entertainment in the sale of its rights in 75 films co-owned with Warner Bros. in a deal valued at roughly $300 million and Lantern Entertainment (which acquired Weinstein Co. out of insolvency) in various matters.
Mr. Spicer observed that the growing streaming video-on-demand market is characterized by a handful of mainstream players. He expects a wider range of services to emerge such as free ad-supported, niche-focused programming, and irregular content like shorts. Looking further into the future, he said, “I do think we’ll see segmentation as [over-the-top] platforms evolve.”
This is the second straight year that Ms. Griffith and Messrs. Burke and Spicer have been named to this list.
