(Washington, D.C.) – Akin Gump is pleased to announce that it has been honored with the ABA Outstanding Pro Bono Advocacy in MLP Award at the Medical-Legal Partnership Summit in Seattle. This recognition is awarded by the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service. The firm’s pro bono partner, Steven Schulman, accepted the award for Akin Gump.
The firm was honored for its “significant role in promoting the adoption of medical-legal partnerships across the country, the furtherance of pro bono within the MLP movement and, in particular, working in collaboration with corporate legal departments on MLP projects. The firm’s leadership has led to the establishment and successful implementation of MLPs in Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and Arkansas.”
The award, established in 2011, is given annually to recognize pro bono partners for their “critical role in expanding the value of medical-legal partnerships.” Akin Gump helped Walmart establish the first corporate-sponsored MLP, at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital. The firm acts as counsel to the National Center for Medical-Legal Partnership. Finally, the firm, through Equal Justice Works, is sponsoring two post-law school fellows providing legal counsel at MLPs —Jonathan Killoran at the Inner City Law Center in Los Angeles and Krista Selnau at Arkansas Legal Aid (co-sponsored with Walmart).
Founded in 1945, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 850 attorneys in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
