Akin Gump Successfully Represents Freeman in EEOC Discrimination Appellate Case
(Washington, D.C.) – Akin Gump, on February 20, achieved a successful decision for its client Freeman, the leading global partner for integrated experiential marketing solutions for live engagements, in an appellate case that followed a Maryland district court’s 2013 dismissal of an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) hiring discrimination lawsuit involving criminal background and credit checks.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit confirmed the dismissal of the EEOC case against Freeman, which alleged that the company’s practices had a disparate impact on African-American, Hispanic and male job applicants.
Akin Gump labor and employment partner and former EEOC general counsel Don Livingston, who led the firm’s team at the district court and appellate levels, said, “We are very pleased with today’s ruling. It confirms that the EEOC sued with merely a theory and had no facts to support the claims of discrimination.”
