Akin Gump international trade partner Bernd Janzen has been quoted in the Bloomberg Law article “Trump to Lay Out Economic, Trade Plan in New York Speech.” The article reports on a speech this week by President Trump that could shape the agenda for trade talks with China and India as well as other trade-related issues.
According to the article, European Union officials are hopeful that President Trump will use the speech to back off of his threats to impose tariffs on auto imports. He has until November 13 to decide or extend the deadline.
Janzen said the administration can maintain its leverage by not imposing tariffs on the 13th, since it can still renew the threat at a later date. “Having the card in hand to play in the future will be an attractive option for the President,” he noted.
