In its article “U.S. Presses Ahead on Plan to Limit High-Tech Exports,” Bloomberg quoted Akin Gump international trade partner Kevin Wolf discussing the Trump administration’s new export control law. The White House, the article reports, is seeking to tighten restrictions on technology exports in an effort to protect national security.

According to the article, Congress supports the law and, while it’s not aimed solely at any one particular country, China remains a key focus. For the tech sector, however, getting its products into markets overseas would become more difficult.

Wolf, a former Commerce Department official in the Obama administration, said industry should remain vigilant and engaged, but not pessimistic.

“If the administration abides by the standards in the new export control law, then any new export controls will be narrowly tailored to specific, identifiable critical technologies that are essential to the national security and would not harm domestic research or the U.S. economy,’’ Wolf said.
