Akin Gump public law and policy practice co-head Brian Pomper was quoted in The Hill’s “Lobbyists gear up for critical year on trade,” an article looking at some of the top trade issues facing Washington lobbyists in 2019.
Speaking of the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which was signed in November, Pomper said, “It’s the most high-profile, it’s the most immediate. It’s, in some respects, the most interesting” of all the trade questions facing K Street.
The question, he pointed out, “is whether the two sides, being the Democratic leadership and the White House are going to be able to negotiate something that will allow USMCA to pass through Congress.”
But time is of the essence for President Trump, Pomper added. “The withdrawal notice ripens after six months, after which the president can formally withdraw. It's not automatic after six months.”
