Chris Spicer Quoted by Bloomberg on Financial Impact on Actors and Producers from Growth of Streaming Services

Akin Gump entertainment practice head Chris Spicer has been quoted in the Bloomberg article “The Growth of Streaming Hits Actors and Producers in the Wallet.” The article reports that, as the majority of the movie industry shifts toward greater streaming of its films, those who produce and star in them are seeing an adverse financial impact.

As the article notes, the majority of movies that appear on streaming services do not get released in theaters. The services pay for them upfront, which means stars, producers and filmmakers can’t earn the windfalls that come from blockbusters at the box office.

“Broadly speaking,” said Spicer, “the streaming model does have the potential to transfer more of the long-term economic upside from the talent pool—the producers and talent—to the streamer.”
