Corporate Counsel Ranks Akin Gump Among Top 10 Patent Litigation Firms
(New York) – Corporate Counsel, in its 2014 Patent Litigation Survey, has for the first time ranked Akin Gump among the top 10 patent litigation firms in the U.S. These ranking are based on the number of federal district court patent suits handled by a firm in 2013.
In the accompanying article, Akin Gump intellectual property practice head Steve Zager commented on the increasing pervasiveness of patent litigation, saying, “Companies have gotten more sophisticated about IP. They’re no longer afraid to go to trial to defend or assert their IP assets.” He also observed that lawsuits tend to be levelled at larger, stable companies of the sort that Akin Gump represents.
Corporate Counsel notes that the firm represents such companies as Lenovo Inc., Johnson & Johnson, Samsung Electronics Co. and Google Inc. Zager believes that recent court rulings and congressional efforts at patent reform that could begin to marginalize nonpracticing entities (NPEs), colloquially known as “patent trolls,” will not reduce the number of patent case filings in 2014. Because NPEs still receive money both from litigation and private equity, there is still an incentive for them to find more patents. He added, “Patent litigation won't diminish. Just follow the money."
Founded in 1945, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 900 attorneys in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
