Daniel Feldman Quoted Broadly by Media on Trump Strategy for Afghanistan
Akin Gump international trade partner Daniel Feldman was quoted in a variety of U.S. and international media outlets on the Trump administration’s new strategy in Afghanistan. Speaking with, among others, NPR, Bloomberg, CNN and the BBC, Feldman—who previously served as the special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan at the U.S. Department of State—noted:
- Trump’s newly announced strategy is largely a continuation of the strategies implemented under both presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
- While Trump’s decision to remain engaged in Afghanistan has been welcomed by many experts, it remains unclear how it will be implemented and what the economic and political aspects of Trump’s “integrated strategy” might be.
- Civilian and military experts agree that there is no military resolution to the Afghanistan situation, so diplomacy will be the key to engaging regional and extra-regional players in negotiating a political settlement in the country.
