Daniel Feldman Quoted by NY Times on Afghanistan’s Mineral Wealth, POLITICO on Continued U.S. Presence
The New York Times has quoted Akin Gump international trade partner Daniel Feldman for its article “Trump Finds Reason for the U.S. to Remain in Afghanistan: Minerals.”
The article notes that administration officials and advisers have identified Afghanistan’s abundant mineral wealth as a resource that could be extracted by Western companies, alongside maintenance or expansion by the United States of its military presence in the country.
On the topic, Feldman, who served in the Obama administration as the Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan at the U.S. Department of State, said, “There are undoubtedly minerals to be exploited in Afghanistan, which could help provide economic stability to the country in the future. But given all the obstacles, it could be many years before mining yields dividends for the Afghan people.”
POLITICO, meanwhile, in its article “The Trump White House’s War Within,” on debates within the administration regarding whether the U.S. should escalate in, or pull out of, Afghanistan, quotes Feldman as characterizing the debate as similar to the scenario of the film Groundhog Day. He notes that American leaders keep facing the same dilemmas over and over while the war continues.
