Deborah Newman Recognized Among Law360’s 2016 Rising Stars
(New York) — Akin Gump litigation partner Deborah Newman has been recognized by Law360 in its annual “Rising Stars” series, which honors top lawyers under 40 years of age based on their career accomplishments in their respective fields.
Selected in the category of “Bankruptcy,” Ms. Newman consistently litigates some of the most cutting-edge issues in bankruptcy litigation today and has been involved in a number of high-profile and complex multibillion- and multimillion-dollar bankruptcy matters for clients including Aurelius Capital Management, LP and UMB Bank, NA. In its profile of Ms. Newman, Law360 notes in particular her leading role in the firm’s “successful courtroom fight to shield General Motors’ unsecured creditor trust from billions in liability claims.”
In another matter, Newman, as the article reports, led successful efforts on appeal to reverse a New York court’s denial of summary judgment sought by Lukoil Americas Corp. against parties seeking $140 million after the Lukoil subsidiary they bought soon had financial troubles. She described it as “a wonderful day” when the court unanimously agreed with her argument and brief on the position that monetary damages were barred by the stock purchase agreement.
Newman discussed the role she plays in helping to mentor other young lawyers. “I think I’m particularly drawn to female lawyers. I see a lot of myself in them,” she said. “I think it’s good for them to see someone like me who has been able to succeed in a field that is still often primarily dominated by men.”
